1-Click Decision Support
Client
1-click decision support (1CDS, formerly known as MedSocket) is a health IT company dedicated to improving treatment outcomes by providing customized clinical decision support, information retrieval, and medication savings solutions that target multiple points along the patient care pathway.
Project goal
The primary objectives were to assess the efficiency of the semantic search feature within the 1-CDS tool, integrated into the Electronic Health Records, within a simulated work environment. Additionally, the study aimed to gauge user satisfaction with this specific feature and evaluate the overall quality of user interactions with 1-CDS.
Role
My responsibilities included conducting a needs assessment, performing a heuristic evaluation of the 1-CDS interface design, carrying out a usability evaluation with potential users, synthesizing the findings into a comprehensive report, and presenting the results to key stakeholders.
Tools
Morae for user interviews, usability metrics like time-on-task, number of clicks
Team
Client, research team, usability team.
Outcomes
One notable discovery was the enhancement in time on task and a reduction in the number of clicks required to complete search tasks when using the semantic search feature. The results of usability assessments confirmed the existence of usability issues within the electronic health records. This study resulted in a conference presentation "Using semantic search to reduce cognitive load in an electronic health record" (2011) and two journal publications "“I Don't Have Time to Dig Back Through This”: The Role of Semantic Search in Supporting Physician Information Seeking in an Electronic Health Record" (2014) and "Evaluating a federated medical search engine" (2014) and one conference presentation "Using semantic search to reduce cognitive load in an electronic health record" (2011).
